Jomo Sono is sitting pretty at the top of the ABC Motsepe League after three games, as he looks to win promotion back to the National First Division with Jomo Cosmos.
Ezenkosi have won all three of their opening matches, scoring six goals and conceding none. They are two points ahead of second-placed Wits University.
Sono is confident that his side can gain promotion to the second tier this season. “First year, I was just learning the ropes, and to my surprise, we came in second position,” Sono said. “This year, I’m more relaxed, more focused, and I’m seeing so many good players down there, and this is what I love the most.”

Cosmos have a strong squad, with a mix of experienced players and youngsters. Sono is a South African football legend, having played for Orlando Pirates and the national team. He is also a successful coach, winning several trophies with Cosmos, including the South African Premier Division title in 1987.
He is determined to get Cosmos back to the top flight of South African football. “I’ll get this team back; I’m confident in my abilities,” he said.

They recently got a shot in the arm when Jobe Foundation came on board to sponsor them. Cosmos’ next match is against third-placed M Tigers FC on Wednesday, 18 October. A win would see them extend their lead at the top.
The ABC Motsepe League is the third tier of South African football. The winner of each provincial division qualifies for the national playoffs, where two teams are promoted to the National First Division.
In the 2021/22 season, the club was relegated to the Third Division stream of professional football in South Africa.
Jomo Cosmos FC was founded in 1983 by Jomo Sono, who named it after his former NASL club, the New York Cosmos. The name Dion Cosmos was used in the first season but was changed to Jomo Cosmos in 1984.
