Orlando Pirates defender Sandile Mthethwa is unfazed by his limited game time at the club and is determined to prove himself when called upon.
Sandile Mthethwa is yet to feature in the DStv Premiership for Pirates this season, but he is not discouraged as he embraces the challenge of competing for a starting spot in the wake of Olisa Ndah’s return from injury.
The centre-back has, however, played three times for the Soweto giants in the 2023/24 campaign, once in the MTN8 and twice in the CAF Champions League.
While acknowledging that his game time might be reduced, Mthethwa remains determined to make the most of every opportunity presented to him by coach Riveiro.
ORLANDO PIRATES’ MTHETHWA READY TO STEP UP WHEN NEEDED
“The competition, for me, is to help the club so that whenever I get a chance, I make sure that I help,” said Mthethwa. “It’s not always about you, but the club.
“When you don’t play, you have to support the guys that are playing so that when you get the chance to play, also make sure that they support you.”
The 26-year-old understands that Ndah’s return adds depth to the Pirates’ defence, but he remains confident in his abilities.

Ndah made his first appearance for Pirates since February in the MTN8 final against Mamelodi Sundowns, while Mthethwa was watching from the stands at the Moses Mabhida Stadium as Bucs won 3-1 on penalties following a goalless draw after extra-time.
At centre-back, Pirates also have Tapelo Xoki and Nkosinathi Sibisi, who are ahead of Mthethwa in the pecking order.
“A team like Pirates will always have competition because they sign good players that will help and win titles,” added Mthethwa.
Mthethwa’s unwavering commitment to self-improvement and willingness to embrace challenges will impress Coach Riveiro.
