Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker has welcomed Darrel Matsheke to the club, outlining what the former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder brings to Stellies.

Matsheke was unveiled by Stellenbosch FC on Wednesday after penning a one-year deal and an option to extend for a further year.

He is seen as a replacement for Sibongiseni Mthethwa, who joined Chiefs a few days before the 2023 September transfer window closed.

The 24-year-old Matsheke trained with Stellies for about three weeks before the club decided to sign him.

He left Amakhosi at the end of last season following two loans in the Motsepe Foundation Championship at the now-defunct side Uthongathi FC and DStv Premiership side Moroka Swallows. Matsheke featured 32 times in both leagues.

At Swallows in the 2022/23 season, Matsheke made 19 appearances in the DStv Premiership.

In addition, the midfielder played in the CAF Champions League during his stay at Chiefs.

STEVE BARKER CONFIDENT MATSHEKE WILL ‘ADD VALUE’ AT STELLIES.

“Stellenbosch Football Club is delighted to announce that the club has acquired the services of midfielder Darrel Matsheke,” reads the club statement.

“Matsheke has signed with Stellenbosch FC on a free transfer following the conclusion of his contract with Kaizer Chiefs at the end of last season and arrives in the Cape Winelands as a welcomed addition to the club’s midfield.”

Meanwhile, Barker added: “Darrel adds quality and depth to our midfield positions, specifically as a defensive midfielder.

“He is technically sound, plays with a lot of energy and intensity, and has the ability to break down attacks, and once he has done that, he has the ability to then progress the ball either through the quality of his passing or by carrying the ball.

“We welcome him to the SFC family and are confident that he will add much value to our squad,” concluded Barker.
