The Carling Knockout Cup, a new tournament in the PSL, will offer a prize of R100,000 to the Man of the Match in each game.

However, the organisers have not yet announced the prize money for the winning team.

The fans of the beautiful game will get to vote for the player of the match, as confirmed by Arnie Rust, brand director at Carling Black Label. “If you are the champion of the match (Man of the Match),” he said.

“Fans also have an incredible opportunity to vote for the man of the match during the game. The stellar players who win the man of the match will walk away with arguably the biggest MOTM cheque on the continent worth R100 000 at each match,” reads the PSL statement.

This was announced at Tuesday’s Carling Knockout Cup draw in Hyde Park in Johannesburg.

It is worth noting that the 16-team tournament differs from the one-day Carling Black Label Cup, where fans vote for the teams and start line-ups.

The Carling Knockout Cup replaces the Telkom Knockout, and it will see all 16 teams in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) toe to toe. The champions of the Telkom Knockout used to walk away with R4.25 million.

The PSL’s media manager, Fhatuwani Mpfuni, said that the prize money for the Carling Knockout Cup winning team will be announced when the league releases the dates and venues for the tournament.

Following the fixtures draw, Mpfuni said: “The venue for the final of the tournament will be announced when we get to the semifinals,” said Mpfuni after the draw.

As explained by the PSL: “The winners of the Carling Knockout tournament will face a Carling All-Star team selected by the fans in the new format of the Carling Black Label Cup.

“Carling Black Label will empower the voice of the fans like never before, allowing them to put together the Carling All-Star team with players from the other 15 Premier Division clubs, as well as the Diski Challenge sides. This will enable fans to see their favourite stars playing together in one team.

“Six of the players in the Carling All-Star team starting line-up will be from the Premiership clubs, and five will be called up from the Diski Challenge sides. The Carling All-Star team will be coached by one of the 15 PSL coaches, who will also be voted for by the champion fans. Fantasy soccer becomes a reality with the Carling Cup.”
