Former Al Ahly assistant coach Cavin Johnson joins Kaizer Chiefs as Head of Academy

 Former Al Ahly assistant coach has joined Kaizer Chiefs as the new Head of Academy, the Soweto giants announced on Friday.

He will oversee the club’s youth development and scouting network.

Johnson has valuable experience at youth level having started his coaching career as a youth coach at the Transnet School of Excellence, working with Dillon Sheppard, who is now an assistant coach at Amakhosi.

In addition, the ex-PSL coach has a UEFA coaching license and specializes in youth football.

He also has international coaching licenses from CAF, the Dutch Football Association, and the Brazilian CBF.

Between 2008 and 2012, Johnsom was the Director of the Royal Bafokeng Sports Academy, where he helped nurture talent at the Platinum Stars academy.

He later went on to coach Platinum Stars, SuperSport United, AmaZulu, and Black Leopards.

The 64-year-old also served as Pitso Mosimane’s assistant coach at Egyptian giants Ahly.

He won the CAF Champions League in 2020 and 2021. Johnson expressed his delight at joining Chiefs.

“I am happy to join Kaizer Chiefs as Head of Youth and the scouting department,” he said.

 His most recent job was assisting Motsepe Foundation Championship outfit, La Masia.

“For me, joining Amakhosi means joining an institution. I am also happy to bring along all my experience that I have gained over the past 20-25 years of working with youth,” added Johnson.

“Hopefully, in my time at Kaizer Chiefs, we will be able to unearth and develop the next Doctor Khumalos, Ace Khuses, Jabu Pules, Tinashe Nengomashas.

“We are aiming to get to the level where Kaizer Chiefs develop a lot of the players they need, and local players that are able to play in this ‘heavy’ jersey that is called Kaizer Chiefs.

“It is a privilege and an honour, and I would like to thank the Chairman, as well as the Board of Directors, including Bobby Motaung, Kaizer Jr., Jessica and Kemiso for allowing me to join such a big organisation.”
