Bafana Bafana star Lyle Foster has reacted to scoring his first goal in the Premier League on Sunday, stating that it was a bittersweet moment.

Foster’s maiden strike in the EPL wasn’t enough to help his side Burnley FC avoid a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa at Turf Moor on Sunday.

The 22-year-old halved the deficit with a superb finish from inside the area a minute into the second half. But Villa then restored their two-goal advantage through Moussa Diaby on the hour mark.

And despite the Clarets losing the game, Foster can cherish a memorable moment as he became the ninth South African player to score a goal in the English Premier League.

LYLE FOSTER ON HIS FIRST PREMIER LEAGUE GOAL: ‘I’M GRATEFUL’

“I am very grateful to get my first goal and open my account in the Premier League,” said Foster.

“It doesn’t taste as sweet as I would have liked, but I’m really happy to get my first goal in the top-flight. We pushed for the equaliser and tried to get a second goal after that but it wasn’t meant to be.”

“It was a difficult game against a very good side. We tried to assert ourselves and we had moments in the game where we tried to do that.

“But the two early goals put us on the back foot and we had to go back to the drawing board. We have to keep going and try to stop conceding early goals as you can get punished in this league.”

Foster added: “We have learnt a lot already so far; we have played two really good sides with exceptional players. “But we are a young squad with really good players and we will work hard to get things right and improve every day.”
