Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Lesedi Kapinga reveals the type of a team he wants to join amid reports linking him with a move to Kaizer Chiefs.

Lesedi Kapinga, who is also linked with Orlando Pirates parted ways with Sundowns last month as the Tshwane giants decided against extending his stay at the end of his three-year contract.

He had joined Sundowns as a highly-rated star following an impressive stint at Black Leopards. However, Kapinga failed in Tshwane, making only 39 appearances in three years, mostly coming in as a substitute.

The 28-year-old now free to join a team of his choice, has stated that he wants to play in an environment where he will be appreciated.

He insinuated that his spell at Sundowns was a valuable lesson in terms of choosing a better career destination in the future.

Several ex-players and pundits, including Junior Khanye have urged Kapinga to join Amakhosi. They believe the attacker could help the club reclaim their glory days while enjoying his football.

“I leave that [next destination] to my agent, and I will speak to him maybe from Monday when I get to Joburg,” said Kapinga. “But I feel like right now, it’s only a matter of me getting in a space where I’m going to play.

“[I want] a team that is going to appreciate me. I just want to be a part of a team that believes in me and a place where I can play more,” he added.

In addition, Kapinga reflected on his time at Sundowns, insisting that he doesn’t regret joining the club.

Kapinga believes that he had to go through a tough period to be strong as a player and person.

“Mentally, maybe it got me in a good space. I believe I have learnt a lot, so I wouldn’t say it’s a bad thing,” he explained.

“Maybe I had to go through such a thing for me to be strong as a player and also to grow as a human being. So I just take it as a lesson and be wise [in future].”

Kapinga was part of the Bafana Bafana team that finished third in the recently concluded 2023 COSAFA Cup in Durban.

“I feel like Cosafa gave me a belief that I can do more as a player I really think I needed this one. I needed to be at camp with the guys.”
