Dondol Stars goalkeeper Sphamandla Gumede secured a big move to Orlando Pirates following his exploits in the Nedbank Cup last season.
The ABC Motsepe League side, Dondol, had a fairy-tale run in the 2023 Nedbank Cup, beating a number of top sides including SuperSport United and AmaZulu.
The goalie played a vital role in between the sticks as he pulled off several good saves during the games and in the penalty shootout.

Dondol’s run was ended by eventual winners, Pirates, who beat the amateur outfit in the quarter-final stage via penalties. Gumede impressed in that clash.
Gumede has since joined Pirates, with Dondol confirming the move on Monday in a statement on social media.
As a result of his efforts, Gumede was nominated for the Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player of the Season and was named in Bafana Bafana’s preliminary squad for the 2023 COSAFA Cup

Gumede is Pirates’ fifth new signing ahead of the new season following the acquisition of Patrick Maswanganyi (SuperSport United). Katlego Otladisa (Marumo Gallants), Sephelo Baloni (Cape Town All Stars) and Melusi Buthelezi (TS Galaxy).
The young goalie will fight for a place in the starting line-up with the likes of Siyabonga Mpontshane, Richard Ofori, Sipho Chaine, and Buthelezi.
