Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed the signing of their third high-profile Brazilian midfielder Lucas Ribeiro Costa.

The club announced on Thursday as they gear up for the 2023/23 season.

Ribeiro Costa joins Sundowns from SK Beveren in Belgium.

The 24-year-old caught the attention of the Tshwane giants following a good 2022/23 campaign at Beveren, where he scored 11 goals and provided eight assists.

Sundowns’ faithful will expect Ribeiro Costa to be another classy addition to the squad. The club has a history of signing successful players from South America, and Costa is seen as a potential future star.

“Brace yourselves Masandawana! Lucas Ribeiro Costa has joined the Yellow family! Join us in giving Costa a warm welcome to the squad,” said Sundowns in a brief statement.

Costa began his career back in his home country Brazil at Pinheiros-SC before having a stint in France at Ligue 2 outfit Valenciennes FC.  He then moved to Belgium, where he played his football for four seasons, mainly in the second division, the Challenger Pro League.

However, he did feature in the country’s Premier League, Jupiler Pro League, in the colours of Sporting Charleroi in the 2020/21 season, playing eight games.

In a video posted by Sundowns on their social media accounts, Costa said he is happy to join the club.

“I am really excited to be here. I cannot wait to dance to the sound of the drum that encapsulates the yellow nation,” said Ribeiro Costa.
