SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews has explained the club’s decision to sign a former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder.

Matsatsantsa have been busy in the market as they gear up for what promises to be a busy upcoming 2023/24 season.

The Tshwane side is set to compete in five tournaments namely, the DStv Premiership, CAF Confederation Cup, MTN8, Carling Cup and Nedbank Cup.

Mathews and SuperSport head coach Gavin Hunt are well aware that they need to reinforce and strengthen the squad as they look to compete rather than add numbers.

On Wednesday, the club announced the signing of Phathutshezdo Nange from Kaizer Chiefs on a two-year contract.

Nange reunites with Hunt after spending some time with the coach at Bidevest Wits and Chiefs.

The 31-year-old experienced midfielder was introduced at the professional level back in 2014 at Black Leopards before joining Wits in 2019. Nange later penned a deal with Stellenbosch FC for.

WHY SUPERSPORT SIGNED NANGE

Mathews said SuperSport said Nange because Hunt can get the best out of him and he is a quality player. He believes Nange will hit the ground running at the club.

“Phathu Nange is a player we have liked for some time, so it’s great that we have been able to secure him on a free contract from Kaizer Chiefs,” said Mathews.

“Having played for Gavin before, we are confident he will hit the ground running and give our midfield a boost with goals and assists as he did at Stellenbosch, Bidvest Wits and Black Leopards before.”

Meanwhile, Nange expressed his delight at joining SuperSport: “I would like to thank SuperSport United for the opportunity they gave me,” he said.

“It is a great feeling to join SuperSport and I’m looking forward and excited to start a new journey in a positive way.

“I worked with coach Gavin before and we had a clean working relationship. He is a winning coach by nature and good for his players because we all want to win at the end of the day.”
