Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has reacted to penning a contract extension at the club. 

Mokwena, who was appointed as the sole head coach in October 2022 has signed a new four-year deal that will see him stay at Chloorkop until 2027.

The Soweto-born coach is rewarded with a new contract after guiding Sundowns to their sixth DStv Premiership title in a row. 

MOKWENA WON A TOP GONG 

Mokwena also steered the Tshwane giants to the CAF Champions League semi-finals where they lost to Wydad Casablanca on the away goals rule. 

In addition, he was named the DStv Premiership Coach of the Season following Sundowns impressive campaign. The club won the league with a handful of games to spare and 16 points ahead of second-placed Orlando Pirates

And at some stage, Mamelodi Sundowns went on a run of 24 matches unbeaten with Mokwena at the wheel in the just-ended season.

The coach has since reflected on his contract extension at Sundowns, expressing his gratitude to the club’s management for granting him the opportunity to lead the former African champions. 

“You know you are loved, appreciated and you are wanted. I look in the eyes of my players every single day and I think there’s still more to be done,” said Mokwena. “And because of that feeling, I felt the need to be able to put myself at service for this incredible institution once more.

“I want to try to help the club achieve more and win more trophies. With the love and the warmth I receive also from the supporters as a servant of this football club, I’ve grown to love the club. 

Mokwena went on to state that he is eager to prove his loyalty at Sundowns, while also thanking the club’s supporters for showing him, love. 

FEELS HONOURED 

The tactician said he feels honoured to be trusted by the management to lead the club. 

“The big responsibility of leading the club at this moment where I feel the privilege I have to also thank the supporters for loving me and making me feel appreciated and welcomed,” he added. 

“When we lose I suffer just as much and because I live and I breathe the emotions when we win I’m just as happy. This is what makes this club very special and important football club.”
