Pitso Mosimane believes Percy Tau should be named Champions League player of the tournament after the Bafana star forward drove Al Ahly to a record 11th title.

Mosimane told his 1.2 million Twitter followers that Tau had shaken off frustrating injury spells to show his class and become the force behind the Egyptian giants’ history-making feat.

â€śPatriotic Lion of Judah wearing the respectable South African flag. That Flag is very notorious for winning major trophies in different countries and continents! Thanks God injuries gave you a break to show your talent. My player of the tournament and a Champion of Africa,” tweeted Mosimane.

The respected coach made his comments shortly after Al Ahly held Wydad Casablanca to a 1-1 draw in the second leg of the final last night in Morocco. It was enough for Percy Tau and his brave Warriors to be crowned champions as they carried a 2-1 from the first leg victory in Cairo.

Percy Tau has indeed had a sterling Champions League tournament, scoring five goals and providing five assists to emerge as the Red Devils’ stand out player. The 29-year-old has played himself into the history with his performance. Tau last night became the first South African to win the Champions League twice. He first won it with Mamelodi Sundowns in the 2015/16.

Mosimane, who signed Tau for Al Ahly from English Premiership side Brighton and Hove in 2021 when he coached Africa’s Club of the Century, feels vindicated by the Bafana Star’s contribution.

Since arriving in Cairo, Tau has won the CAF Super Cup, Champions League, the Egypt Cup and two Egypt Super Cup titles with Al Ahly.
