There are developments in Durban as AmaZulu FC search for their next coach ahead of the 2023/24 season.

The club cut ties with Ayanda Dlamini, who held fort as interim coach towards the end of last season.

This was after the club demoted Romain Folz after a string of poor results.

NOT NEW TO SOUTH AFRICA

AmaZulu will on Friday interview Belgian coach Luc Eymael to fill the vacant post at the club.

Messages seen by SN24 between the club and Eymael’s camp confirm that AmaZulu President and Owner Sandile Zungu will interview the coach on Friday.

Luc Eymael is not new to the South Africa DStv Premiership. He won the Nedbank Cup with Free State in 2018 when they edged Maritzburg United 2-1 in the final.

The Belgian also had a successful spell with Polokwane City when he guided them to a respectful sixth-place finish in the 2016/17 season.

It is against this background of visible success in the Premiership that Usuthu has identified the well-travelled coach as a possible replacement for Romain Folz and of late Ayanda Dlamini for the 2023/24 season.

Eymael knows African football very well having coached in several African countries that include Tanzania, Sudan, Tunisia, Egypt, Gabon, Rwanda, Kenya and Algeria.

The UEFA Pro License holder is aptly qualified to lead the revival at AmaZulu and appears to be the frontrunner for the job ahead of Alfons Groenendijk, an assistant coach at Turkish Super League outfit Antalyaspor.

RELEASED 11 PLAYERS

This week AmaZulu released 11 players after a forgettable season that saw them barely survive relegation. Dlamini, who steered the team to survival, was also deemed not good enough for the top job after he collected just five points from a possible 18 in his six games in charge.

“When he replaced Romain Folz, his (Dlamini) mandate was very simple, forget relegation. His mandate was to take AmaZulu FC to the top eight. He could have collected 18 points, which was unlikely but possible.

“His target was to bring us into the top eight, and he didn’t accomplish it. He got five points. He did less than 30%, which is not a pass. It wasn’t a stellar performance, particularly by AmaZulu standards,” Zungu told journalists.
