Cape Town Spurs ascended to the top spot in the Motsepe Foundation Championship title race after a hard-fought 2-1 victory against NB La Masia at Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday.

It took an injury-time goal by Luvuyo Phewa to give Spurs maximum points as Casric Stars dropped points when it mattered most.

SPURS ASSUME POLE POSITION

Spurs needed a late winner against stubborn La Masia in the final minute of injury time to walk away with the crucial three points.

Shaun Bartlett-coached club travelled to Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday, looking to bounce back from a shocking 2-1 defeat against Venda Football Academy at Thohoyandou Stadium last Saturday.

Elsewhere, Polokwane City picked up maximum points in Championship to take the title race down to the wire after beating Platinum City Rovers 2-0 at Olen Park.

City returned to winning ways after they suffered a 1-0 loss to Uthongathi at TUT Stadium last Saturday.

CASRIC STARS DROP POINTS

Meanwhile, Casric Stars, also vying for the automatic promotion to the Premiership, dropped points against VFA.

Stars missed the opportunity to stay top of the table in the National First Division as they came to this weekend’s fixture sitting on top with a point advantage.

Furthermore, the relegation fight in the NFD has been decided after two former Premier Soccer League clubs were relegated.

The Vhembe district endured a heartbreak last weekend after Black Leopards and Tshakuma Tsha Madzivhandila were relegated to the ABC Motsepe League.

Leopards and TTM were relegated as they finished the season in 16th and 15th position, respectively, with one goal left before the season ended.

However, TTM could still have a lifeline as Venda Academy could be docked points if deemed to have used a defaulter.
