DStv Premiership relegation battle 2022/23: who has the toughest?

Home » DStv Premiership relegation battle 2022/23: who has the toughest?

The 2022/23 DStv Premiership season has entered the penultimate stage, with just three matches left.

The team that finishes the season in 16th place will automatically drop to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Number 15 will slug it out in the relegation play-offs. Three teams find themselves in a precarious position, faced with the danger of dropping to the South African second tier.

Marumo Gallants, Chippa United and Maritzburg United are all not safe.

Interestingly, Gallants face Maritzburg on Wednesday evening in a potentially explosive clash.

MARITZBURG LIKELY TO GET THE CHOP

It’s been a challenging season for the Pietermaritzburg outfit, having started the season under John Maduka. After a string of poor results – amassing 11 points from 13 games – Fadlu Davids replaced the Malawian.

The struggles have continued despite the coaching changes at the club. The club even brought reinforcements like Ali Meza, Bradley Cross, Kwame Peprah, Wayde Jooste and Fariq De Goede.

The Team of Choice are at the basement of the table, just a point behind 15th-placed Chippa United after picking 25 points in 27 matches.

After the Marumo tie at home, they take on Stellenbosch FC before visiting league champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

Interestingly, Marumo, CAF Confederation Cup semi-finalists, face Sundowns on Saturday.

They wrap up their eventful season with a tie against Swallows, who are pushing for a top-eight finish.

CHIPPA UNITED IN DANGER

Chippa United are also in danger of relegation after a string of poor results. They are one point above Maritzburg with 26 points.

Chippa will still travel to KZN to face Richards Bay FC and TS Galaxy in Mpumalanga. They will close off the season with a home tie against Golden Arrows.

Chippa have been under five different coaches this season, having started the season with Daine Klate. Morgan Mammila, Kurt Lentjies and Siya Gwambi have taken turns to guide the team.

The responsibility to save the Chilli Boys from the chop is on Lehlohonolo Seema who took over from Gwambi last month.
