Musa Nyatama fires salvo at SAFA

Budding Swallows FC coach Musa Nyatama has fired a salvo at SAFA over remarks that he is unqualified to coach in the Premier Soccer League.

Nyatama is in charge of Swallows after the club parted ways with Dylan Kerr earlier in the season.

He recently retired from playing football after stints with Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Swallows.

Having been thrown in the deep end following Kerr’s exit means Nyatama would not have had the chance to do his coaching badges.

WHAT SAFA TOLD JOURNALISTS

Last week, SAFA technical director Walter Steenbok told journalists that the association planned to make it compulsory to have a CAF A to coach in South Africa.

Steenbok was engaging with football journalists in a Round Table discussion.

Musa Nyatama’s name was used as an example of a coach in charge of a PSL team without the right qualifications.

Swallows’ technical advisor Morgan Mammila was also mentioned, having switched from administrative roles to coaching earlier this season.

Mammila was in charge of Chippa United for five months before landing the Swallows gig.

“To be honest, I heard them talking about it, but I didn’t see it. But the question would be, ‘Does SAFA provide the CAF B or CAF A [courses]? That would be my question,” asked Nyatama.

COACHING COURSES

Nyatama is aware that SAFA have struggled to provide coaching courses for local mentors wanting to advance themselves for years.

Nonetheless, the country’s football mother body is eager to streamline these requirements along with the decision taken by the Confederation of African Football [CAF].

The continental mother body has ensured that only coaches with the A license or equivalent can coach in their competitions.

Several local coaches, including Eric Tinkler, Dan Malesela and Khabo Zondo, could not sit on the bench in CAF competitions.

“Do they provide it [the coaching qualifications]? If they do, then the coaches will attend. My route is to try and get a CAF B and then an A license. I want to learn and get the certificates,” Nyatama explained.
