‘It’s not an easy thing to take’: Arthur Zwane

Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane has singled out one thing that is not easy to take at the once Glamour Club of South Africa.

Chiefs have gone eight years without winning a league title, which remains a concern.

Zwane was brought in at the start of the 2022/23 DStv Premiership season to guide the club back to glory.

However, it has not gone as anticipated, with inconsistent results throughout the season.

On Sunday, Sekhukhune United completed the double over Chiefs after beating them 1-0. On their 50th birthday celebrations, Amakhosi lost to Babina Noko by the same scoreline.

“We are coming off a defeat after doing well for some time, so it’s a case of having to pick ourselves up and keep the spirit high in the camp while, at the same time, making sure we get maximum points to build the team going forward,” Arthur Zwane told Chiefs’ website.

“In football, there are no easy games. We prepare for the games with the same attitude, desire and discipline.

“We know, as a team of Kaizer Chiefs calibre, when we go through a slump or lose a game, it’s not an easy thing to take, especially given the following we have.

“It knocks them down. For us, it’s how we pick ourselves up from that. It’s a setback, but it’s not a train smash.

“We now have to come back and show that we are good enough to be part of the plans going forward because we want to build a very strong team. It’s one of those things we can live with and learn from but move on at the same time.”

With fixtures coming thick and fast, Zwane knows he will have to manage his charges well.

They play Swallows FC in the league before the Soweto Derby in the Nedbank Cup semi-final.

“There are many things that are playing in our players’ heads, such as, ‘I want to be part of the Soweto Derby, but I don’t want to risk an injury or suspension’.

“As a coach, those are the things I am going to have to try and manage -to help players not to think about, but to think about the job at hand, which is the next task against Chippa United, and the following one which is Swallows. Then, from there we can start talking about the Soweto Derby.”
