WHERE DOES YAN SASSE PLAY?

The 25-year-old turns out for New Zealand outfit Wellington Phoenix where he signed a one-year deal last year.

When he penned the short-term deal, he had featured in 47 matches in Brazil’s top division, the Brasileirão, América Futebol Clube.

Before that, he spent a season in Turkey’s Süper Lig, where he played for Çaykur Rizespor Kulübü.

Phoenix head coach Ufuk Talay said he was a technically good player after they signed him.
“He’s a South American 10, so he’s technically good on the ball, explosive and is good in one vs one situation,” Talay said.

“He’ll bring balance to our midfield. We’ll have a player that can create goalscoring opportunities while also scoring goals.

“He’s played as a winger previously, so he can do that job defensively out wide too.”

THE EIGHTH BRAZILIAN TO PLAY FOR PHOENIX

Sasse became the eighth Brazilian to pull on the Phoenix in six years. Gui Finkler was the first Brazilian to don the club’s colours in 2017.

He started his career at Porto Alegre-based Sport Club Internacional as a nine-year-old. The Brazilian side plays its football in the Serie A, a first division in the South American country.

His career then took him to Red Bull Bragantino II at 14 before switching to Coritiba Football Club two years later.

Aged 19, he made his professional debut for the Serie A outfit. The club then sent him on loan to the famous Brazilian side Vasco Da Gama where he spent a season before another loan spell at Çaykur Rizespor Kulübü.

He scored seven goals in 69 appearances for Coritiba between 2016 and 2021.

In New Zealand, he has scored three goals and three assists in 20 outings. He often operates on the right wing but can also be deployed as an attacking midfielder.
