Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Daniel Cardoso has shared his thoughts on his former club’s rebuilding exercise.

Arthur Zwane took over the reins at the start of the season and has opted for young players.

Academy graduates Mdu Shabalala and Samkelo Zwane have had plenty playing opportunities under the Amakhosi legend.

Cardoso has given his verdict on Chiefs’ approach to the rebuild that is meant to end an eight year trophy drought.

“I don’t want to open up a can of worms, but youngsters are not going to win you titles and trophies,” the candid defender said.

“They are in a rebuilding phase, as you can see – [Samkelo] Zwane, [Mduduzi] Shabalala, [Happy] Mashiane, [Siyabonga] Ngezana, they got rid of all the experienced players.”

DAINEL CARDOSO COMPARES

He made a comparison with recently crowned DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

“If you look at Sundowns’ team, they’re experienced players, that’s why they win trophies season in, season out,” he explained.

While he believes Zwane is laying a good foundation, he points out that winning trophies requires a balance.

“[Zwane] has a good foundation going on there, but to win titles and trophies, I think you need far more experience, especially on the field.

“I mean, they have quite a few experienced players sitting in the stands and at home, and I think it’s been missed for them.”

Chiefs are in the semifinals of the Nedbank Cup, their only shot at silverware this season.

They are also chasing a second place finish which would guarantee them a CAF Champions League spot.

SuperSport United moved to second place on 44 points after their goalless draw with Marumo Gallants on Wednesday.

Pirates are now third although they have a game in hand while Chiefs are fourth.

Chiefs have a chance to go level with SuperSport if they beat Sekhukhune on Sunday at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. However SuperSport would still be ahead on goal difference.
