Possible departures at Mamelodi Sundowns

Home » Possible departures at Mamelodi Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns have always taken pride in having a wide selection base to pick from, ensuring they are hardly ever short in numbers.

And the quality of their squad has always been so good that when the technical team makes changes, it barely affects their performances.

Their big squad has also helped the Brazilians deal with possible fatigue when balancing participation on the domestic scene and in the Caf Champions League.

However, a big, star-studded squad is never easy to handle, and from time to time, some players will show their frustration at their limited game time.

This has been the case for players like Lesedi Kapinga and Andile Jali, to name but a few, who seem to be unhappy with not playing regularly.

As a result, Rulani Mokwena and the rest of the Sundowns hierarchy might have some tough decisions to make at the end of the season.

They will look to offload some players they deem surplus to requirements to make space for new recruits when the transfer window opens.

Here are some players who will most likely be out of Chloorkop at the end of the campaign.

Andile Jali

The veteran midfielder has been the talk of the town in recent months, with his future hanging in the balance.

Jali has seen his game time significantly reduced this season, despite playing a pivotal role in Sundowns’ domestic treble last term.

Mamelodi Sundowns are yet to table an offer for the ex-Orlando Pirates star, whose current contract expires in June.

It’s looking increasingly likely that he will be on his way. Jali has been rumoured to be admired by the likes of Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu.

Lesedi Kapinga

The former Black Leopards midfielder has not had much joy at the club this season in the way of game time and looks set to seek that elsewhere.

Kapinga has only managed to make six appearances in all competitions this season. He requested a move from the club in the January window, but nothing materialised. He could get his wish at the end of the season.

Bradley Ralani

The skilful attacking wizard is another one that hasn’t seen as much game time as he would like this season.

The former Cape Town City midfielder has appeared only 11 times for Sundowns this season, scoring a solitary goal.

The 35-year-old could be one of the players who call it quits at Downs at the end of the season, with competition for places getting tougher.

Gift Motupa

The near-forgotten former Bidvest Wits striker has been reduced to a spectator at Sundowns in recent times.

He’s made just two appearances this season and hasn’t found the back of the net yet. Motupa has not been able to settle since joining Downs from now-defunct Wits in 2020. He could be sacrificed to make space for new arrivals.

Kennedy Mweene

Theseasoned shot-stopper is nearing the end of his illustrious career and looks set to hang up his gloves sooner rather than later. The number of goalkeepers mamelodi Sundowns have means Mweene could be forced to call time on his career as he looks to prepare for life after football.

Reyad Pieterse

Another Sundowns goalkeeper who has hardly kicked a ball in recent seasons is the former Kaizer Chiefs man Pieterse. He finds himself behind Ronwen Williams, Dennis Onyango and Mweene in the pecking order. And the fact that Mamelodi Sundowns also have the duo of Ricardo Goss and Jody February out on loans at SuperSport United and AmaZulu makes things even worse for Pieterse.
