Bafana Bafana talisman Percy Tau lifted his third cup title since arriving in the Egyptian capital as Al Ahly beat Pyramids 2-1 after extra time.

Percy Tau and his compatriot Fagrie Lakay met in the final of the Egypt Cup in Cairo on Monday night.

‘The Lion of Judah’ started the match, while Lakay came on in the 84th minute with the game deadlocked at 1-1.

The explosive encounter saw nine yellow cards and a red card dished out, as Ahly cruised to a record 38th Egypt Cup title.

The much-awaited clash watched by 20,000 supporters who thronged the Cairo International Stadium.

The result meant Ahly’s coach Marcel Koller remained unbeaten in domestic competitions while laying his hands on his second trophy since joining them at the beginning of the season.

The Swiss mentor’s first piece of silverware was the Egyptian Super Cup last year in October.

On the other hand, Lakay’s cash-rich Pyramids lost their third final. The former Egypt champions will have to wait a little longer before they add a trophy to their cabinet.

The owners of Pyramids, who have invested immensely in the club, had earlier indicated they want to withdraw their Egypt investment.

They feel their team needs to be treated fairly in the North African country. They had requested international referees to handle the Egypt Cup final, which was turned down.

Despite approaching the game with a bit of caution, Pyramids took the lead in the 72nd minute. They got their only goal through Walid El Karti.

However, their joy was short-lived as Mahmoud “Kahraba” Abdel-Moneim levelled terms. This was two minutes later from point-blank after connecting a header from Yasser Ibrahim.

Extra Time

As the game headed into extra time, Ahly piled pressure on their Cairo neighbours. It finally paid dividends when Hamdy Fathy nodded a header from a long Hussein El-Shahat delivery.

The former African champions displayed a fighting spirit and determination as they made it a memorable night for their fans.
