Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has had his say on Gaston Sirino playing for Bafana Bafana.
There has been talk about the Uruguay-born forward representing the South African national team.
The 32-year-old arrived in South Africa for the past five years, having joined Sundowns in July 2018.
Pitso Mosimane signed Sirino after being scouted by Walter Steenbok and Esrom Nyandoro.
Mosimane has previously stated that Sirino would be a great addition to Bafana Bafana.
‘Jingles’ tried luring Sirino to Egypt when he left to join Al Ahly of Egypt in 2020. However, Sundowns refused to release him.
Mokwena has weighed in on the matter, saying it shouldn’t be a subject of discussion. He believes if the player is good enough, he should be given an opportunity.
“If he has the thing [papers] and everything possible, I think he can add value; of course, fortunately, I don’t select the national team,” Mokwena told journalists at Dobsonville Stadium.
He spoke after Gaston Sirino’s return to the Sundowns squad after an injury layoff. The talented attacker featured for 23 minutes as Sundowns drew 0-0 with Swallows in a DStv Premiership encounter.
Sundowns have already won the league title, wrapping it up with seven games before the end of the season.

“It’s the hardest thing; there are so many good players in this country. So I don’t think even if there’s a good player available, there should even be a discussion.”
Sirino has won nine trophies since arriving at the club, including six league titles, scoring 36 goals and registering 41 assists in 170 games across all competitions.
Sirino was born in Montevideo, the capital and largest city of Uruguay. He has never represented Uruguay in an international competition meaning that he can play for Bafana if he holds South African citizenship as per FIFA rules.
Since joining Sundowns from Bolivar in 2018, he has gone on to become a reliable performer in the top-flight.
